France’s National Assembly has adopted a measure to boost renewable energy, cut back nuclear generation, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40% from 1990 levels by 2030, in line with the target established by the European Union.
“The French government wants to be exemplary this year in environmental matters, since Paris is hosting a UN-backed conference in December where 196 countries aim to limit greenhouse gas emissions to fight global warming,” the Associated Press reports.
The legislation would reduce nuclear power from 75% to 50% of France’s electricity supply by 2025. It would also require state and local governments to buy at least 50% low-emission vehicles when they replace their bus fleets and “force all private owners of houses and apartments to renovate their properties if they consume a high amount of energy, one that exceeds a defined threshold,” the news service notes.
