Canada’s SkyPower Global has signed a $2.2-billion contract to build a 1-GW solar project in Kenya, East Africa’s biggest economy.
Kenya already produces two-thirds of its electricity from renewables, mainly hydropower and geothermal, but has no other solar developments at this scale, Bloomberg reports. The project will take shape over the next five years.
In 2013, Kenya announced plans to install 5.5 GW of new capacity, mainly from coal, geothermal, and liquefied natural gas, in a bid to increase its economic growth from 5.5 or 6% to 10% per year.
